LGBT+ History Month – LGBTQ Mental Health Inequalities
This February, the Leadership Academy is partnering with MindOut, a mental health charity dedicated to improving the lives of LGBT community.
This training will allow participants to gain insight into the experiences and needs of LGBTQ people with mental health issues. This brief crash course in LGBTQ mental health awareness will cover a broad range of topics and is suitable for attendees of various knowledge levels. Trainees will learn about the propensity for anxiety, depression, substance misuse, suicidal ideation and self-harm in LGBTQ populations, and the dynamic societal forces that contribute to these health phenomena.
About the Trainer
Alysa Friedrich (she/her) is the Training Programme Manager with MindOut LGBTQ Mental Health Services, where she works to design, sell and deliver specialist LGBTQ inclusion and mental health training to national and international clientele. She has worked in the third sector for over eleven years, in thirteen US states and three different countries, on a diverse range of campaigns and issues including reproductive justice, LGBTQ rights and non-discrimination policy, and gun violence prevention. Alysa has been training on LGBTQ issues for over five years, with a focus on leadership development, affirmative inclusion and organizational capacity-building. She has supported over ten thousand trainees through workshops in LGBTQ topics, and has received praise and feedback for her informative, yet warm and approachable facilitation style. Alysa has a Bachelors of Arts in Urban Studies and Social Justice from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities, as well as a Masters of Arts in Sociology, Photography and Urban Culture from Goldsmiths, University of London. She currently resides in Brighton with her spouse and their thirty houseplants.
