All our trainers are working coaches and we teach you the least you need to know to be able to coach well.  \nIn 2020\, the material drawn on to support the delivery of this programme was published by McGraw Hill as ‘Simplifying Coaching’ and is recognised around the world as a core text for coaching at work and coaching professionals.  \nWhat previous participants say  \n“It doesn’t have to be perfect. It doesn’t have to be an all or nothing thing. It’s an incremental approach and [you] can start to introduce the coaching approach into your conversations in lots of different ways. And it doesn’t have to be that that whole conversation is a coaching one\, but that you are using elements of what we are learning. It’s part of our toolkit now and making us think differently about how we might have some of our conversations.”   \n“This course seemed unique in its focus on simplicity and practice\, with regular feedback – instead of coming out of it thinking with practice this will be really useful\, but then forgetting to practice to embed it. I am already using it and it is becoming second nature to me.”  \n“Definitely do less. To achieve more. Because it doesn’t make you a worse manager. It actually makes you a better manager”  \nListen to how physio Ben Jeeves is using a coaching style in his work with patients.  \nJoining the Building a Coaching Culture programme – What you need to know  \n\nCoaching is simply a conversation where someone feels heard and gets new insights into their own stuff. This makes a coaching style useful in many different kinds of conversations. \nWe are developing and refining skills. This is experiential learning. There is no back row. \nEveryone will give and receive coaching up to 8 times in small groups – so you will need to come ready to learn\, think your own things through and contribute to the learning of others. \nYou will need to be fully present and able to fully focus in every session – cameras on \n\n\nThis way of working can feel very weird. 95% of people get it by the end of the course and for some it is a steeper learning curve and a much more rewarding journey than they were anticipating. \nThere is no written work or reading. You will need to watch a video between each live session. This is a core part of the learning. You can access the learning portal through your smartphone\, tablet\, work or home computer – or a combination. \nIf 3D wonder by the end of the programme if this way of working is for you\, we will talk to you about that. \nThere is no expectation from 3D that you will become a coach. Many people don’t. They just have better conversations as part of a more collaborative culture in the organisation. If you want to become a coach\, this is the first step! \nAttendance certificates will only be issued for delegates who have completed the whole course and watched all the videos. \n\n\nTo support ongoing development of Leadership Academy offers\, we ask that as part of your participation in this programme\, you engage with our course evaluation. This involves completing two short surveys\, one before and one after the programme. Your feedback is invaluable\, it provides us with insights into your experiences of our programmes and informs us of any future needs. All responses to our surveys will be anonymous and totally confidential. Any reports will only include consolidated results with no reports at an individual level.  \n\nHow to book your place   \nYour booking is not confirmed until you have received a confirmation email. SUMMARY:Why Networks Matter
DESCRIPTION:About the event: \nAs thinking around health and social care shifts from a focus on organisational structures to a recognition of the importance of systems\, the need to find new ways of understanding the world of work arises as a matter of urgency. \nOrganisation charts have told us about hierarchies – who sits where in terms of position and pay – but they have offered little insight into the connections that sit beneath them and which serve to get the work done in practice. \nThis half-day event will offer the expertise of a number of contributors to help us collectively to explore networks in organisational contexts – and the extent to which they support us to work effectively and systemically\, while at the same time helping us to recognise their vital role in terms of moving to a genuinely inclusive workplace. \nIt will be an interactive session with a keynote panel discussion on the topic followed by focused breakout events to explore key facets of networks and how we might think in greater depth about them in the context of systems working and inclusive practices. \nAbout our contributors: \nFRANCESCA PALLOTTI is an Associate Professor in Economic Sociology at the Networks and Urban Systems Centre\, University of Greenwich (UK). She holds a PhD from the Catholic University of Rome (Italy) and a MSc from the University of Birmingham (UK). Her research draws upon a network perspective to examine how the structure of social relations develops and affects individual opportunities and outcomes. Dr Pallotti’s research has examined processes of network formation\, evolution and social influence among and within healthcare organizations\, and most recently among physicians\, and individuals affected by behavioural eating disorders. \nPROFESSOR BRUCE CRONIN specialises in the role of business networks in strategy and innovation within and across organisational and national boundaries. He is Director of the Centre for Business Network Analysis and Co-Director of the Networks and Urban Systems Centre. His corporate clients have included Defra\, Ernst & Young\, Institute of Management Consultants\, London Knowledge Network\, McGraw-Hill\, Nesta\, NHS\, Northern Trust\, Oxford University Press\, Pearson\, Pensions Regulator\, Thackray Williams\, Work Foundation\, Unilever\, Universities UK \nFor nearly twenty-five years\, INGA CARBONI has helped individuals and organizations increase engagement\, innovation\, and leadership effectiveness by applying the science of networks and network analysis to the development and management of productive working relationships. SUMMARY:Leading with Courage & Compassion
DESCRIPTION:About the session:  \nThe need for a people-focused approach to leadership in the NHS has become vital in the recent turbulent times. Compassion and courage are two of the six NHS care values required by health and social care staff. This workshop will explore how they can make us effective leaders who focus on the need for a passionate commitment to do the ‘right things at the right time’ for service users.  \nThis engaging and interactive workshop\, which will be split into two modules\, will provide an important insight into what it means to lead with courage and compassion in the NHS. An interview with an expert guest speaker will outline why leading with courage and compassion is important in meeting the challenges of the current and future climate. SUMMARY:CPD for Coaches: Express Coaching
DESCRIPTION:About the session:  \n This will explore Express Coaching from the perspective of the coach:  building an understanding of how to be impactful as a coach in a time-limited\, outcome focused coaching session.  \n Calibrating your practice to supporting a coachee in potentially one standalone session can be challenging.  Overcoming some of the potential barriers\, natural preference and indeed bias to practicing in longer term coaching relationships will be key. Their pioneering work in social learning is influential in such diverse fields as learning theory\, business\, government\, international development\, healthcare\, and education. Their consulting practice specializes in contexts where there are large-scale social learning challenges. They founded the Social Learning Lab\, where they host series of events oriented to theory\, practice\, and leadership. The co-edited volume Learning in landscapes of practice expands the theory beyond single communities. Systems convening sheds light on a crucial form of social-learning leadership. They are preparing a guidebook for communities of practice. They have started a book series called Learning to make a difference and recently published the first volume. It introduces the concept of social learning space as a new foundation for the theory\, and their value-creation framework as a tool for both conceptualizing and cultivating social learning. SUMMARY:Leading Inclusively and Appreciatively
DESCRIPTION:We continue to lead through challenges in the Covid and social world. Living with complexity\, uncertainty\, ambiguity and volatility as new ways of working emerge\, compassion for ‘others’ can often be overlooked. Leaders need to think about their role in this changing landscape. Additionally\, making relationship-based leadership work in the virtual world has created the need for more networked and inclusive leadership skills. \nThis workshop series is not just for Diversity and Inclusion leaders but for all leaders. It is about what you ‘do’ as a leader to create a socially inclusive culture and not who you ‘are’ as a leader. \nIn this workshop\, Leading Inclusively and Appreciatively\, we build on the theme of understanding\, to focus on communication and messaging and to be an active catalyst for an inclusive culture. We will explore how to recognise micro-aggressions\, how to generate agency\, supportiveness and allyship in others and how to be an active bystander through interventions. Developing the courage to lean into difficult situations\, developing the skills for adaptive styles of communication and messaging are all themes of this workshop. \nWhether it’s about your colleagues\, patients\, service-users or carers\, you’ll learn\, as inclusive leaders\, how you can lead by example and develop a culture of appreciation for diversity and the challenges of also working in a virtual world. \nEach workshop will last for 3.5 hours\, with breaks\, and we will use a variety of models and break-out techniques for you to explore challenges and barriers and develop a personal plan. This programme is not to teach you about ‘difference’ but to help you to lead with what makes us all unique and stronger together. \nAbout the Facilitators \nJohn Aspden has been a Facilitator\, Executive Coach working with healthcare professionals for the past 10 years. John originally trained as a General Nurse\, with experience as a senior nurse in Theatres and Intensive Care and as a Mental Health Nurse and with subsequent international sales and marketing roles in medical technology companies. He is a leadership facilitator on both the Rosalind Franklin and Mary Seacole Leadership Academy programmes and a coach and leadership facilitator with the Faculty of Medical Leadership & Management. \nJohn adds value by helping people to learn and develop on their ‘edge of comfort’\, to stretch past what they thought was possible and not only to develop personally\, but also to develop a passion to make a difference within the organisation as leaders. His areas of interest and expertise are around Change Management\, Political Astuteness\, Resilience\, Team-Working and Diversity & Inclusion. \nVikram Millns brings a broad range of skills within business including leadership around strategic & commercial expertise\, quality & continuous improvement\, employee engagement\, Inclusion\, and diversity leadership. He brings industry excellence in customer and business development\, systems and operations\, service and product development\, marketing and brand building. He has run extensive online programmes with audiences all over Europe\, Middle East and Africa and at technology conferences. He has strong cross-cultural working experience and has lived and worked in India and the UK. \nTHIS EVENT IS NOW FULLY BOOKED \n\nYou can request a place on a waiting list by emailing jake.cutting@leadershipacademy.nhs.uk

SUMMARY:Sustaining a Good Team Culture
DESCRIPTION:About the session:  \nThis is an interactive\, inclusive and practical learning burst style session to support line managers and team leads in creating\, sustaining and in some cases resetting their team culture.   \nNHS Team Leaders\, Managers and Clinical Leads shoulder an ever-increasing burden of responsibility as they are required to actively manage an increasing acute combination of competing factors facing their teams and the services they provide: financial constraints\, backlog demands\, workforce shortages\, staff morale\, over-reliance on regulation and a centrally-driven target culture.   \nThis is an opportunity for individuals to access practical\, easy-to-apply methods and approaches which are designed to support their teams. Providing individuals with invaluable thinking time to consider their teams current culture baseline\, and the strength of the team’s foundations combined with a focus on how to support teams to move forward.  \nThe approach   \n\nWe create a psychologically safe space for people to learn and share experiences developing new and trusted connections. \nWe are agile in our delivery building trust and connection. We are able to draw on extensive professional knowledge\, expertise and psychological practice to ensure that the sessions can flex to meet needs that might present on the day. \nWe offer in the moment coaching feedback\, and small group working to help build confidence and ensure a participative session. \n\n\nWe use a supportive facilitating style to encourage individuals to reflect and stretch their thinking and their abilities. \nWe provide opportunity for practice and consideration of application – to ensure new approaches\, tools\, and techniques are explored before they leave the session \n\nWe hope participants leave the session feeling confident\, able and willing to ground their learning in their current context and implementation. The focus is on the transfer of learning and its application\, ensuring that all material covered in the ‘virtual’ classroom can be used the same day in the work environment.  \nWe run a ‘last in the room’ approach to ending each virtual learning session. Rebekah is  always the last one to leave the session and invites people who may have specific issues\, or team challenges\, or simply didn’t feel able to speak out during the session to stay on the call.   \nWho is this session for:  \nThe NHS Leadership Academy provides leadership development for people of all backgrounds and experiences across health and care.  \nAbout the facilitator  \nRebekah Giffney\, Chartered Occupational Psychologist  \nRebekah is a highly skilled and experienced Chartered Psychologist. A confident facilitator speaker and coach\, Rebekah has a proven track record of delivering engaging and powerful development programmes. She is at the forefront of the provision of leadership development for clinicians and managers in health and care settings across the country. SUMMARY:LGBT+ History Month - Service User involvement
DESCRIPTION:This February\, the Leadership Academy is partnering with MindOut\, a mental health charity dedicated to improving the lives of LGBT community. \nMindOut is very proud of the fact that our service users\, as current or former participants in our mental health and wellbeing services\, are key to our design-making and governance processes. This success hinges upon a clear & shared understanding of an asset-based approach and the principles of co-production\, which will be explored and discussed in detail in this 90-minute session. Delegates will explore service user involvement as a process by which people are able to become actively and genuinely involved in defining the issues of concern to them; in making decisions about factors that affect their lives; in formulating and implementing polices; in planning\, developing and delivering services\, and in taking action to achieve change. \n  \nAbout the trainer \n \nMadeline Davis (she/they) is an experienced equity\, diversity\, and inclusion trainer and advocate\, and has been working across trans liberation and service provision all her adult life\, having come out in 2014. Madeline started her activism within the National Union of Students and Oxford University Women’s Campaigns\, and ran the Oxford University trans student’s group\, where she was involved in setting university policy for trans people. They worked for MindOut as a Trans Mental Health Advocate and later as the Community Engagement Worker for three years\, in addition to being a Research Assistant at the University of Oxford (where they completed their MA)\, and the Institute for Development Studies. Madeline now works as the Data Coordinator for the Trans Learning Partnership\, translating service user data and research into policy and is taking a break from her PhD on trans experiences of suicide at the University of Brighton. She has delivered trans EDI training for eight years in a variety of settings for universities\, public bodies\, social groups and companies. Beyond employment\, Madeline is active in London queer and feminist activist circles and has a personal interest in leatherworking\, rock climbing and poetry.  \n  \n  \n\n\n \n LGBT+ History Month - Service User involvement 28th Feb 2023\n Please complete this form to book your place. \n \n Full Name:*Band*Email:*Telephone number:*Your current role:*Organisation*Region:*LondonSouth East EnglandEast of EnglandMidlandsNorth East EnglandNorth West EnglandOtherICS you are based in:*Please select the ICS you are based inNorth East LondonNorth West LondonNorth Central LondonSouth East LondonSouth West LondonNot ApplicablePlease indicate any additional requirements or comments i.e. disabilities

SUMMARY:Leadership in Action Exchange (LAX): A learning space for NHS\, Local Authority\, and Third Sector Leaders
DESCRIPTION:The LAX is a collaborative initiative between the NHS London Leadership Academy (LLA) with colleagues from London Councils. It also reflects informal connections that the LLA has forged with health-related charitable organisations in the capital. \nIt is convened in recognition of the need amongst leaders in health and social care to have space and time to consider the practicalities of seeking to work in harmony together with a common aim. Additionally\, it recognises how these endeavours can no longer be seen as straightforward and that the complexity of all of this requires a new way of seeing and being in our world. \nThe convenors come to this endeavour with nothing more than an earnest ambition to offer an opportunity for motivated leaders to develop their appreciation of the nature of the systems in which they work and to find ways for themselves to qualitatively change the way in which they show up in those systems. \nThere is no “Grand Plan” for LAX among the organisers. Instead\, this activity will mirror the way that we should all be working in our systemic contexts. First and foremost\, that means bringing people together in a safe space for an honest dialogue. \nThe artist Paul Klee talked about taking drawing as being taking a line for a walk. The convenors see LAX as a means to take understanding\,\nideas and relationships for a walk\, just to see where they take everyone who is involved. \nWhat happens after LAX\, then\, will be determined solely by what happens at LAX. And participants will be the person who decide that. \nWe invite you to consider joining this online event if: \n\nYou have a role that inspires you to try to connect more of the system to itself for the benefit of the population;\nYou recognise a need to expand your appreciation of how thinking systemically might support vital innovation in health and social care; and\nYou are convinced that traditional leadership cannot deliver what is currently needed and there is not a ready-made new\nmodel of leadership waiting in the wings.\n\nOr if you are just motivated to think critically and creatively about crafting innovative\, effective and equitable health and social care! \nWe will run LAX via Zoom\, offering up to 100 people the opportunity to come together on the day to engage in a collective inquiry in order to sense make around the issue of working in systems. It will also provide the chance to challenge ourselves to think as expansively as we can around the core question of how we might encourage the development of a 21stC system that wraps around each and every resident in the population that we serve. \n  \nTo book your place please click on the link below\, you will be redirected to NHS England events page. \nhttps://www.events.england.nhs.uk/events/leadership-in-action-exchange-a-learning-space-for-nhs-local-authority-and-third-sector-leaders
