FINDING YOUR VOICE

How coaches, mentors and facilitators can support workplace conversation

Over the past five years, the NHS Leadership Academy – London has supported an extensive programme of work on speaking up and listening up in the workplace. Alongside this, of course, we have enabled NHS staff to become accredited coaches, mentors and facilitators, so that they are then able to work with other people across the service to support them in their development.

After 18 months of the pandemic, we are even more mindful of the significance of voice in organisations. To this end, we are convening this meeting for people who have come through one of our programmes to come together to explore the role that voice plays in their practice – and the ways in which that practice can be enhanced to work on the issue of voice better.

The event will run virtually via MS Teams on 9 March 2022 from 1pm – 3.30pm. We are delighted to advise that we will be joined for a keynote presentation by Henrietta Hughes, who was until recently the Freedom To Speak Up National Guardian. She will offer some reflections on her time in that role – and some suggestions as to the work that remains outstanding.

We are also excited to be able to offer a number of breakout sessions, covering topics such as the voice of the user or client and the practicalities of voice;. And, not least because this is an event about voice, we will be inviting participants to speak about their experiences in this respect and their fresh thinking about how our practice can foreground voice and give people the confidence to speak.

We are actively inviting all coaches, mentors, action learning set facilitators, and anyone else across health and social care who works in conversation with others to support their development to join us for this opportunity to explore the topic and expand our thinking and practice in light of that inquiry.
